This spreadsheet performs thrust block designs for WUD Type 1 thrust blocks according to the recommendations in the WUD Technical Manual on Pipes & Pipelines. It contains a design table where parameters like pipe diameter, bend angle, test pressure, and pipe cover can be entered. It then calculates the required thrust block dimensions, including height, width at the pipe, and width at the face. General design parameters like soil data and properties are also input. The spreadsheet uses formulas to calculate thrust force based on these inputs and designs the minimum sized block to resist this thrust force based on passive soil pressure calculations.

A thrust block is typically used to anchor pipelines and prevent movement when pressure is applied to the pipe, calculating the necessary size of a thrust block for a pipeline subjected to internal pressure, commonly for bends, tees, or other fittings.

Thrust block size is calculated based on some factors like pipe diameter and soil bearing load, and to design thrust block we provided you with excel for finding the thrust block area, volume and dimensions.

Pipe Thrust Block Calculation Steps:

Calculate Thrust Force (F)

This is the force generated at a fitting due to the internal pressure.

Formula: =P * PI() * (D^2)/4

Where P is the internal pressure, D is the pipe diameter.

2Calculate Thrust Block Area (A)

To calculate the required thrust block area, use the formula:

A =F / σ_max

Where F is the thrust force and σ_max is the allowable stress of the soil.

Calculate Thrust Block Dimensions

Once you know the required thrust block area, you can compute the dimensions of the thrust block. Assuming it's rectangular, you could calculate the length and width or use a circular thrust block depending on the shape.

Input Data for Thrust Block design:

Pipe Diameter (D) (m)

Internal Pressure (P) (Pa)

Allowable Soil Stress (Pa)

Once you enter the values for Pipe Diameter, Internal Pressure, and Allowable Stress, the sheet will calculate the required thrust force and thrust block area automatically.
